Drill Ideas for House League

For House League coaches there are some drill below to help with practices. Not all drills will be suitable for all children and age groups but can give you ideas. Each drill should be around 5-8 minutes. The most important part of soccer for these age groups is that they are having fun!

Red Light, Green Light:

To play Red Light, Green Light in soccer, players dribble their ball toward a designated finish line on a "Green Light" and must stop immediately on a "Red Light" command and move slowly on a "Yellow Light" command. If they continue moving after "Red Light," they must return to the starting line.

Soccer Freeze Tag:

Coach can be "it" or another player. Players dribble the ball and hold the ball above their head if tagged with legs wide. To be unfrozen, another player must kick a ball through their legs.

What's the Time Mr. Wolf?

In the "What's the Time Mr. Wolf?" soccer game, players call out, "What's the time, Mr. Wolf?" and the "Mr. Wolf" (coach or player) responds with a time (e.g., "one o'clock"). The players then dribble that many steps forward. If the "Mr. Wolf" calls "Dinner Time!", the players must dribble back to the starting line, and the "Mr. Wolf" tries to tag them or steal their balls. Players must keep control of the ball or go back to the starting line.

Protect Your Egg Game

Players dribble their balls (eggs) while the coach tries to steal their eggs. Players can sit on their eggs to protect it from the coach. Younger players might find it fun to tell you what's in their egg. A chicken? A penguin? A baby dinosaur?

Race and Score

Line up 2 sets of cones in front the net and split players into 2 groups. Players can dribble round cones and race to score. Players should get a high five or other signal before moving.

Catch the Coach

Players dribble the ball around the practice area. Players try to hit the coach with the ball. Older players can count points and younger players can pick an animal noise the coach has to make if they hit them with the ball.

Simon Says

Just like the original, players can be asked to place a foot, elbow etc. on the ball, do 5 toe taps, ring the bell, whatever is appropriate for your group.
